Services

Platform, cloud, security and AIOps consulting for complex production systems.

I work with SaaS companies, AI companies and scale-ups whose infrastructure has become harder to run than it should be. Each area below stands on its own. In practice they tend to overlap. Security and compliance, in particular, run through all of them.

01

Platform & Cloud Architecture

Build a platform your engineering team can actually operate.

Most platforms aren't designed. They build up over time. Accounts get added when they're needed, pipelines are copied from the last project, and networking decisions made in year one quietly constrain everything after. I help you decide what the platform should look like, then build it: account structure, network design, container platforms, databases, infrastructure-as-code and the pipelines that deploy it all. The goal is a platform your team understands well enough to change safely.

You might need this if

  • Your AWS estate grew one account at a time, with no overall design.
  • Deployments depend on one person, one laptop or one fragile pipeline.
  • A larger customer is asking about multi-region, failover or data residency.

Typical work

  • AWS architecture reviews
  • Multi-account AWS strategy
  • ECS / Fargate and container platforms
  • Infrastructure-as-code with Terraform or CloudFormation
  • CI/CD with GitHub Actions
  • VPC networking, load balancing and DNS
  • Database architecture: RDS, Aurora, RDS Proxy, Redis
  • Multi-region and resilience design
  • Scaling strategy
  • Platform engineering and internal developer platforms
02

Cloud Security & Compliance

Security that works with engineering rather than against it.

Good cloud security is mostly good engineering. That means tight IAM, managed secrets, certificates that don't expire by surprise, reliable audit logging, tested recovery, and controls the platform enforces instead of ones people have to remember. I've worked in financial-services, enterprise and regulated environments where that is a requirement. I help growing companies reach the same standard at a proportionate scale, then answer the questions enterprise customers and auditors will ask, with evidence the platform can produce.

You might need this if

  • An enterprise prospect has sent a long security questionnaire and the deal is waiting on it.
  • You need SOC 2 or ISO 27001 to keep selling, and the technical controls have to hold up.
  • Nobody is fully confident who has access to production, or why.
  • Audit evidence is gathered by hand, the week before it's due.

Typical work

  • AWS security reviews and hardening
  • Cloud security architecture
  • IAM design and least-privilege access
  • Secrets management
  • TLS, PKI and certificate lifecycle
  • Audit logging and security alerting
  • Security controls and guardrails in Terraform and CI/CD
  • Ransomware readiness and recovery planning
  • Security questionnaires and customer security reviews
  • Vendor security reviews
  • ISO 27001 and SOC 2 technical readiness
  • PCI and HIPAA environments
  • Security governance and roadmap
03

Production Reliability & Operations

Know what is happening in production before your customers tell you.

Reliability is mostly an operating problem, not a tooling problem. Dashboards and alerts help, but only when someone owns them and they reflect what customers actually experience. I help set up the signals, the process around them, and an ownership model that keeps them useful after I've gone.

You might need this if

  • Customers report outages before your monitoring does.
  • On-call is so noisy that people have stopped trusting alerts.
  • The same incidents keep coming back, and a different person fixes them each time.

Typical work

  • Monitoring and observability, including OpenTelemetry
  • Alerts that page on symptoms, not noise
  • Incident response and post-incident review
  • Operational dashboards for engineers and leadership
  • SRE practices sized to your team
  • Clear operational ownership between engineering and operations
  • Release readiness and production governance
  • Root-cause analysis on recurring problems
  • Targeted reliability improvements

AI Infrastructure & AIOps

Turn AI experiments into production systems you can operate confidently.

AI workloads bring new infrastructure problems. Expensive GPUs sit idle. Models behave differently between versions. Nobody reviews the prompts. And once something is in production, there's very little visibility into it. I help teams run AI systems with the same operational discipline as the rest of the platform, and choose infrastructure that fits how the workload actually behaves.

You might need this if

  • GPU instances run around the clock for workloads that only arrive in bursts.
  • A model upgrade changed behaviour, and nobody noticed until customers did.
  • The prototype works. Now it has to be operated like production.

Typical work

  • GPU infrastructure and hosting
  • Model serving with vLLM
  • QLoRA fine-tuning pipelines
  • Cloud selection, including AWS versus GCP for GPU workloads
  • Inference cost optimisation and scale-to-zero designs
  • Model deployment and versioning
  • Automated model evaluation and regression testing
  • Drift detection
  • Prompt governance
  • AIOps strategy
  • Production observability for AI systems

Fractional Technology Leadership

Senior technical leadership without needing another full-time executive.

Some companies need senior technical leadership before they need, or can justify, a permanent executive. I can join as a fractional CTO, Head of Platform, Head of Cloud, Head of Security, operations or AIOps lead, or senior technical advisor. I sit in the leadership team and stay close enough to the engineering to know what's really going on.

Fractional roles

  • CTO
  • Head of Platform
  • Head of Cloud
  • Head of Security
  • Operations / AIOps lead
  • Senior technical advisor

You might need this if

  • Your CTO has left, or you've never had one.
  • The board or investors want a credible technical plan.
  • You're about to hire a platform or security team and want someone experienced to shape it.

Typical work

  • Architecture strategy
  • Cloud roadmap
  • Production operating model
  • Security strategy
  • Hiring and team structure
  • Vendor selection
  • Engineering governance
  • Cloud cost control
  • Technical due diligence

Ways of working

Four ways to work together.

Most engagements start with a conversation about what's actually wrong. The format follows from that, and it can change as the work does.

Short, focused

Advisory

A short engagement to review your architecture, security and compliance posture, cloud costs or production operations, and tell you plainly what I find.

Typical outputs

  • Architecture assessment
  • Risk analysis
  • Technical recommendations
  • Prioritised remediation roadmap

Hands-on delivery

Project

Hands-on delivery of a defined technical outcome. I design it, build it with your team, and leave it documented and owned.

For example

  • AWS platform redesign
  • Cloud migration
  • Infrastructure-as-code implementation
  • Observability rollout
  • ISO 27001 or SOC 2 technical readiness
  • Production readiness programme
  • AI infrastructure deployment

Ongoing leadership

Fractional

Ongoing senior leadership, typically one or more days a week. I join the leadership or engineering organisation while you build permanent capability.

Often covers

  • Technical strategy and roadmap
  • Operating model and ownership
  • Hiring and team shape
  • Governance and cost control

A second pair of hands

Troubleshooting

For difficult infrastructure or production problems where your team would benefit from another experienced engineer working alongside them.

Useful when

  • A problem has resisted several attempts
  • Root cause crosses team or system boundaries
  • You need an independent view before a big change

I don't offer generic 24/7 or on-call support. Troubleshooting engagements put an experienced engineer next to your team on a specific problem. They don't replace your operations function.

Tools, not logos

Not sure which of these fits?

Most problems don't arrive neatly labelled. Describe what's going on and I'll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
